How Joel Friant Harnessed the Scotch Bonnet Habanero Pepper

Joel Friant created his Original Habanero Shaker when he decided that there were no habanero chill pepper shakers on the market that met his high standards.


The Original Habanero Shaker was not Joel’s first foray into the world of food entrepreneurship. In 1995 Joel opened a fast food restaurant that severed cuisine based on traditional Thai recipes. It was the first of its kind. This restaurant was the first display of Joel Friant’s love for spicy foods, a love that is reflected in his Original Habanero Shaker.


When he began the creation process of the Original Habanero Shaker, Joel first had to decide which variety of the habanero chili pepper to use. He traveled around the world. Sampling every habanero chili he could find. In Jamaica, he tasted the Scotch Bonnet and decided it would be the variant used for his habanero shaker.


Joel gathered Scotch Bonnets and sun dried them. He then flaked them, using a method that produced the perfect size chunks of habanero pepper. Joel then placed his product in a 1.5-ounce bottle, manufactured to retain the spiciness and flavor of the habanero flakes.


Joel introduced his Original Habanero Shaker to the Washington State retail market, placing it on the shelves of many high profile grocery chains.


Joel entered the real estate market following the launch of the Original Habanero Shaker. He started by purchasing foreclosed homes and renovating them. He then sold the renovated homes for a profit in a process known as house flipping.


Joel noticed his natural knack for real estate work and became a salesman at a local real estate firm. He succeeded in this venture and was recognized as the best salesman in his office.


In 2012, Joel began to explore the potential of internet marketplaces. He studied sites like eBay and Amazon, and the same year he launched a website for his Original Habanero Shaker. He continues to sell this product online.
